Sveicināti, lasītāji!
Šī ir bijusi ļoti nepatīkama nedēļa. Tuvu cilvēku aiziešana vienmēr liek kārtējo reizi saprast, ka esam uz šīs zemes tikai īsu laiku, un ka pēc mums citi turpinās mūsu iesākto vai arī neiesākto darbu. Un tāpēc vēl jo vairāk svarīgi ir tas, ko mēs izvēlamies atstāt aiz sevis. Vai mēs gribam, lai pasaule izbeidzas līdz ar mums (Après moi, le Déluge – „Pēc manis kaut vai ūdens plūdi“), vai mums rūp mūsu tuvinieku, mūsu tautas un mūsu pasaules nākotne?
Mūsu tautas nākotne ir viennozīmīgi saistīta ar jauno paaudzi un tās ieinteresēšanu latviskumā. To veicināsim, palīdzot latviešu skolām, palīdzot tuvināt saites starp latviešiem visā pasaulē. Bijušais melburnietis Juris Rozītis ļoti interesanti raksta šīs nedēļas izdevumā par stāvokli Zviedrijas latviešu sabiedrībā. Ja viņš iesaka Zviedrijas latviešiem mācīties no Austrālijas latviešu pieredzes, tad mums arī pašiem ir daudz ko mācīties. Gan Zviedrijā, gan Austrālijā ir redzama plaisa starp veclatviešiem un jauniem iebraucējiem no Latvijas – gan imigrantiem, gan strādniekiem.
Ko mēs daram, lai vienotu mūsu mazo tautu? Dažs labs grib pulksteni atgriezt atpakaļ uz to, kā iedomājas atceras savas jaunības dienas. Bet atmiņa var pievilt, un ja šim nolūkam izmanto maldus un vēstures viltošanu, tad jāprasa, kam tas kalpo?
Latvijā padomju okupantu atliekas vēl uztur vēstures viltojumu, ka PSRS atbrīvoja Latviju. Šiem cilvēkiem var rādīt objektīvu faktu virkni, bet viņi vēl pastāv uz savu, jo citādi viņi nevar attaisnot savu atrašanos mūsu zemē.

Dear Readers,
This has been a very unpleasant week. The passing of dear people makes us once again aware of the fact that we are on this earth only for a short time, and that after us it will be others who continue the work that we have begun or the work that we have not started at all. And so it is even more important for us to choose what we wish to be our legacy. Do we want the world to end after us (Après moi, le Déluge – “After me, the deluge”), or are we concerned about the future of those close to us, our nation and our world?
The future of the Latvian people is unequivocally up to the younger generation and our ability to interest them in all things Latvian. We can aid this by supporting Latvian schools and helping to strengthen the ties between Latvians in the whole world. Juris Rozitis, a former Melbournite, has a very interesting article in this week's edition, analysing the Latvian society in Sweden. He advises Swedish Latvians to learn from the experience of Australia's Latvians, but we ourselves still have much to learn. Both in Sweden and Australia there is a rift between the Old Latvians (immediate post-war arrivals) and the new arrivals from Latvia – both immigrants and workers.
What are we doing to unite our small Latvian nation? There are those who want to turn the clock back to what they imagine are their memories of their youth. But memories are fickle, and if obfuscation and the falsification of history are their choice of instrument, then one has to ask, for whose benefit is this being done?
The remnants of the Soviet occupation of Latvia are still maintaining the historical fiction, that the USSR liberated Latvia. You can show these people any number of objective facts, but they still hold to their own, because otherwise they cannot justify remaining in our land.
